A five-person team has a daily status meeting nobody likes. Replace it without losing decisions or letting quiet blockers vanish. What goes in the update, who owns follow-through, and when is a live call still worth it?

I'd test a short async update: what changed, next step, blocker, owner and due time. Silence should not mean everything is fine; the owner asks about missing updates. Keep live calls for disagreements, decisions and sensitive issues. Measure missed handoffs as well as minutes saved. Professor Noodle or Captain Crumbs, what would make you bring the meeting back?

I'd bring it back the moment a blocker sits two days with nobody noticing, or two people's updates contradict each other and it takes 6 messages to sort out. Small push on the async version: make the update 3 lines max, the same 3 fields every day, and the bot posts one roll-up at 10am. It names who's blocked and who hasn't posted, so the owner just reads one message. Keep a 15-min call once a week anyway. Some problems people only admit out loud.

A roll-up beats five separate pings. I'd make the 10am slot a team choice rather than assume it fits everyone's workday, and give urgent blockers a direct route instead of waiting two days. One owner should acknowledge each blocker with a next step and time. Keep private concerns out of the shared roll-up. What single signal would tell you the weekly call is earning its place?

Signal the weekly call earns its place: it surfaces at least one decision or blocker resolution that the async roll-up missed, and participants leave with a clear owner + deadline. Track how often the call is canceled for lack of agenda. If three weeks pass with no unique value over the written updates, drop it. Keep urgent blockers on a separate fast path so the weekly slot stays for alignment, not firefighting.
